In most practical engineering applications,the translating belt wraps around two fixed wheels.The boundary conditions of the dynamic model are typically specified as simply supported or fixed boundaries.In this paper,non-homogeneous boundaries are introduced by the support wheels.Utilizing the translating belt as the mechanical prototype,the vibration characteristics of translating Timoshenko beam models with nonhomogeneous boundaries are investigated for the first time.The governing equations of Timoshenko beam are deduced by employing the generalized Hamilton's principle.The effects of parameters such as the radius of wheel and the length of belt on vibration characteristics including the equilibrium deformations,critical velocities,natural frequencies,and modes,are numerically calculated and analyzed.The numerical results indicate that the beam experiences deformation characterized by varying curvatures near the wheels.The radii of the wheels play a pivotal role in determining the change in trend of the relative difference between two beam models.Comparing the results unearths that the relative difference in equilibrium deformations between the two beam models is more pronounced with smaller-sized wheels.When the two wheels are of equal size,the critical velocities of both beam models reach their respective minima.In addition,the relative difference in natural frequencies between the two beam models exhibits nonlinear variation and can easily exceed 50%.Furthermore,as the axial velocities increase,the impact of non-homogeneous boundaries on modal shape of translating beam becomes more significant.Although dealing with non-homogeneous boundaries is challenging,beam models with non-homogeneous boundaries are more sensitive to parameters,and the differences between the two types of beams undergo some interesting variations under the influence of non-homogeneous boundaries.
Tauopathies,diseases characterized by neuropathological aggregates of tau including Alzheimer's disease and subtypes of fro ntotemporal dementia,make up the vast majority of dementia cases.Although there have been recent developments in tauopathy biomarkers and disease-modifying treatments,ongoing progress is required to ensure these are effective,economical,and accessible for the globally ageing population.As such,continued identification of new potential drug targets and biomarkers is critical."Big data"studies,such as proteomics,can generate information on thousands of possible new targets for dementia diagnostics and therapeutics,but currently remain underutilized due to the lack of a clear process by which targets are selected for future drug development.In this review,we discuss current tauopathy biomarkers and therapeutics,and highlight areas in need of improvement,particularly when addressing the needs of frail,comorbid and cognitively impaired populations.We highlight biomarkers which have been developed from proteomic data,and outline possible future directions in this field.We propose new criteria by which potential targets in proteomics studies can be objectively ranked as favorable for drug development,and demonstrate its application to our group's recent tau interactome dataset as an example.
Translational experimental approaches that help us better trace Parkinson’s disease(PD)pathophysiological mechanisms leading to new therapeutic targets are urgently needed.In this article,we review recent experimental and clinical studies addressing abnormal neuronal activity and pathological network oscillations,as well as their underlying mechanisms and modulation.Our aim is to enhance our knowledge about the progression of Parkinson's disease pathology and the timing of its symptom’s manifestation.Here,we present mechanistic insights relevant for the generation of aberrant oscillatory activity within the cortico-basal ganglia circuits.We summarize recent achievements extrapolated from available PD animal models,discuss their advantages and limitations,debate on their differential applicability,and suggest approaches for transferring knowledge on disease pathology into future research and clinical applications.
China's diplomatic discourse is a complicated system underpinned by divergent translations.As such,the concept of"Zhengque Yi Li Guan"(ZhèngquèYìLìGuān in Pinyin),like numerous other Chinese concepts,is not well appreciated.This could be due to the dearth of a uniform official translation and inconsistent interpretation.Therefore,this paper seeks to draw awareness to this vital issue that has been neglected in the China-Africa diplomatic discourse.As a way of filling this gap in the literature,the author argues that literal translation is not enough in diplomatic discourse.Searches of Chinese classical works from texts and dictionaries were carried out to identify the equivalent English words for"Zhengque,""Yi,""Li,"and"Guan."Based on the scope of this paper,emphasis will be placed on"Yi"because it plays a critical role in the"ZhèngquèYìLìGuān"concept and has been the term with the most controversial interpretation.The paper uses the critical discourse analysis(CDA)method as its theoretical framework.The author contends that"justice"(meaning impartiality)is a preferable translation for"Yi"while"interests"is fit for"Li."The article also suggests that"Yi"should be reconceptualized using three approaches:the strategic partnership approach,the international approach,and the regional approach,to represent the realities of current China-Africa relations.
The present essay examines two moments from the evolution of the modern Malayalam novel,in relation to the reception of two classics in world literature,namely Victor Hugo's Les Miserables translated into Malayalam between 1925 and 1927 and Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude translated in 1984.The translation of Hugo's novel energized the scene of Malayalam fiction by infusing new modes of representation and widening the intellectual horizons of writers in general,and novelists in particular.The echoes of Les Miserables could be heard in Malayalam fiction well into the 1950s.The struggles against colonial and feudal authorities in Kerala,provided a fertile context for the imaginative interpretation of Hugo's humanist vision.The paper illustrates this point through close readings of critical essays,autobiographical narratives and debates on the nature of translation.The fascination of Malayali readers with Garcia Marquez has resulted in the translation of his entire corpus into Malayalam.Magic realism as pioneered by Garcia Marquez liberated the Malayalam novelistic narrative from social realist and modernist dogmas.The colonial disruption of oral narratives,the consequent cultural amnesia and the struggle to reclaim one's forgotten past are themes that struck a chord in Malayalam writers of fiction.Through a detailed discussion of the novel,Moustache by S.Hareesh,the interface between novelistic discourse and world literature is mapped in the latter part of the essay.
