Effect of Planting Date on Yield and Yield Components of Grain Sorghum Hybrids

In Kansas, productivity of grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is affected by weather conditions at planting and during pollination. Planting date management and selection of hybrid maturity group can help to avoid severe environmental stresses during these sensitive stages. The hypothesis of the study was that late May planting improves grain sorghum yield and yield components compared with late June planting. The objectives of this research were to investigate the influence of planting dates yield and yield components of different grain sorghum hybrids, and to determine the optimal planting date and hybrid combination for maximum biomass and grains production. Three sorghum hybrids (early, medium, and late maturing) were planted in late May and late June without irrigation in Kansas at Manhattan/Ashland Bottom Research Station, and Hutchinson in 2010;and at Manhattan/North Farm and Hutchinson in 2011. Data on dry matter production, yield and yield components were collected. Grain yield and yield components were influenced by planting date depending on environmental conditions. At Manhattan (2010), greater grain yield, number of heads per plant, were obtained with late-June planting compared with late May planting, while at Hutchinson (2010) greater yield was obtained with late May planting for all hybrids. The yield component most affected at Hutchinson was the number of kernels∙panicle−1 and plant density. Late-May planting was favorable for late maturing hybrid (P84G62) in all locations. However, the yield of early maturing hybrid (DKS 28-05) and medium maturing hybrid (DKS 37-07) was less affected by delayed planting. The effects of planting dates on yield and yield components of grain sorghum hybrids were found to be variable among hybrid maturity groups and locations.

Emerging two-dimensional(2D)layered metal carbide and nitride materials,commonly termed MXenes,are increasingly recognized for their applications across diverse fields such as energy,environment,and catalysis.In the past few years,MXenes/carbon nanotubes(CNTs)-based hybrids have attracted extensive attention as an important catalyst in energy and environmental fields,due to their superior multifunctions and mechanical stability.This review aims to address the fabrication strategies,the identification of the enhancement mechanisms,and recent progress regarding the design and modification of MXenes/CNTs-based hybrids.A myriad of fabrication techniques have been systematically summarized,including mechanical mixing,spray drying,three-dimensional(3D)printing,self-assembly/in-situ growth,freeze drying,templating,hydrothermal methods,chemical vapor deposition(CVD),and rolling.Importantly,the identification of the enhancement mechanisms was thoroughly discussed from the two dimensions of theoretical simulations and in-situ analysis.Moreover,the recent advancements in profound applications of MXenes/CNTs-based hybrids have also been carefully revealed,including energy storage devices,sensors,water purification systems,and microwave absorption.We also underscore anticipated challenges related to their fabrication,structure,underlying mechanisms,modification approaches,and emergent applications.Consequently,this review offers insights into prospective directions and the future trajectory for these promising hybrids.It is expected that this review can inspire new ideas or provide new research methods for future studies.

Total Fat, Fatty Acid Composition, Tocopherol and Tocotrienol Profiles in Fermented Beans of Ten Controlled Pollinated Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) Hybrids from Cameroon

This study aimed to discriminate ten Cameroonian cocoa hybrids according to their total fat, fatty acid composition, tocopherol and tocotrienol profiles. Six cocoa clones from the gene banks of the Cameroon Cocoa Development Corporation were used to create hybrids. The determination of fatty acid composition was carried out by using a gas chromatography (GC) apparatus coupled by a flame ion detector (FID). Tocopherol and tocotrienol analysis was performed by upper high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC). Information on the impact of the genotype on the cocoa fat composition was provided. The major fatty acids (FA) in fermented samples are stearic (34.57%), palmitic (26.13%), oleic (34.13%) and linoleic (3.16%) acids. (35.05% to 35.6%). SCA12 × ICS40, SCA12 × SNK13, SNK13 × T79/501 have the least hard cocoa butters. Tocopherols analysis showed a predominance of γ-tocopherols (94.64 ± 1.51 to 292.16 ± 3.17 µg∙g−1), whereas only a small amount of β and δ-tocopherol (from 0.46 to 2.78 µg∙g−1 and 0.12 to 5.82 respectively) was observed. No γ-tocotrienol was found in fermented samples. A differentiation in terms of total fat and tocopherol content was observed amongst hybrids with the same mother-clone, suggesting an impact of pollen on these compounds.

Increased long-distance and homo-trans interactions related to H3K27me3 in Arabidopsis hybrids

In plants,the genome structure of hybrids changes compared with their parents,but the effects of these changes in hybrids remain elusive.Comparing reciprocal crosses between Col×C24 and C24×Col in Arabidopsis using high-throughput chromosome conformation capture assay(Hi-C)analysis,we found that hybrid three-dimensional(3D)chromatin organization had more long-distance interactions relative to parents,and this was mainly located in promoter regions and enriched in genes with heterosis-related pathways.The interactions between euchromatin and heterochromatin were increased,and the compartment strength decreased in hybrids.In compartment domain(CD)boundaries,the distal interactions were more in hybrids than their parents.In the hybrids of CURLY LEAF(clf)mutants clfCol×clfC24and clfC24×clfCol,the heterosis phenotype was damaged,and the long-distance interactions in hybrids were fewer than in their parents with lower H3K27me3.ChIP-seq data revealed higher levels of H3K27me3 in the region adjacent to the CD boundary and the same interactional homo-trans sites in the wild-type(WT)hybrids,which may have led to more long-distance interactions.In addition,the differentially expressed genes(DEGs)located in the boundaries of CDs and loop regions changed obviously in WT,and the functional enrichment for DEGs was different between WT and clf in the longdistance interactions and loop regions.Our findings may therefore propose a new epigenetic explanation of heterosis in the Arabidopsis hybrids and provide new insights into crop breeding and yield increase.

Production traits and fertility of reciprocal hybrids between Argopecten irradians irradians and A.i.concentricus

The two bay scallop subspecies,Argopecten irradians irradians(NN)and A.i.concentricus(SS),are fast growing and major cultured bivalves in China.However,their relatively small sizes and decreasing production traits caused by long-term inbreeding have been major concerns to the industry in the last two decades.Hybridization between the two bay scallop subspecies may provide a new approach to breed a new variety with superior production traits for the industry.For this end,in this study,we hybridized the two bay scallop subspecies in order to obtain a new strain that incorporates the genes of both subspecies.No significant difference was found in fertilization rate,hatching rate and metamorphosis rate between the purebred and crossbred cohorts(NN♀×SS♂,denoted as NS;SS♀×NN♂,denoted as SN).Both mating strategy(intra-vs.inter-population crosses)and egg origin had significant effects on growth and survival at the larval stage.Heterosis was observed in the crossbred and was more pronounced in older stages.Genetic diversity of the reciprocal hybrids,especially that of SN,was increased compared with the purebred cohorts.Almost all hybrids were completely fertile and able to reproduce by selffertilization or by backcrossing with either parent.Apparently,male sterile individuals whose gonads were fully occupied by the ovary part at mature stage were found in the hybrids for the first time.The hybrids,especially SN,may provide precious germplasm resources for the production of ternary hybrids with the Peruvian scallop,A.purpuratus.

High-resolution remote thermometry based on Bi^(3+)-doped 0D zinc halide hybrids

Developing highly sensitive optical thermometers is of great significance due to their capability to enable remote and non-contact temperature measurements, rendering them highly applicable in diverse and harsh environments. Herein we report a temperature-dependent phosphor of 0D metal halide hybrid by incorporating Bi^(3+)into the(MePPh_(3))_(2)ZnCl_(4) matrix. Through Bi^(3+)doping,the initially non-luminescent(MePPh_(3))_(2) ZnCl_(4) matrix exhibits a deep-blue emission centered at 453 nm, with a photoluminescence quantum yield(PLQY) of 5.71% and a Stokes shift of 75 nm at room temperature. Experimental characterization demonstrates that exciton-like luminescence of Bi^(3+)is mainly responsible for the blue emission. Single crystals of Bi^(3+)-doped(MePPh_(3))_(2)ZnCl_(4) show an unusual correlation between photoluminescence(PL) lifetime and temperature. Particularly, the dependence of luminescence lifetime on temperature is most remarkable in the temperature range of 80 to 100 K with an exceptional sensitivity up to 0.09 K^(-1), representing one of the best levels for thermometry based on PL decay lifetime. Our work not only provides a viable strategy for designing a novel, environmentally friendly, and stable blue emitter, but also paves the way for precise thermometric application at low temperature.

Bulking Up the Bay-Position Substituents Enables Enhanced Selectivity of C_(s)‑Symmetric Boron Subphthalocyanine−Subnaphthalocyanine Hybrids

The precise synthesis of subporphyrinoid hybrids withπ-expanded topologies and unique material properties plays a promising role in the design of functional macrocycles.Easy,selective,and controllable routes to boron subphthalocyanine−subnaphthalocyanine hybrids,Bsub(Pc_(3‑p)-Nc_(p))s,are desirable for this purpose yet synthetically challenging due to random mixtures of C_(s-),C_(3v-),and,in some cases,C_(1)-symmetric compounds that form during traditional statistical mixed cyclotrimerizations.Herein,we addressed this issue by developing a sterically driven mixed cyclotrimerization with enhanced selectivity for the targeted C_(s)-symmetric hybrid and complete suppression of sterically crowded macrocyclic byproducts.This process,coupled with a rationally designed precursor bearing bulky phenyl substituents,enabled the synthesis and characterization of bay-position phenylated Ph_(2)-(R_(p))_(8)Bsub(Pc_(2)-Nc_(1))hybrids with halogens(Rp=Cl or F)in their peripheral isoindole rings.Reaction selectivity ranged between 59 and 72%with remarkable yields,significantly higher than that of conventional mixed cyclotrimerizations.These findings were augmented by theoretical calculations on precursor Lewis basicity as guiding principles into hybrid macrocycle formation.Additionally,the incorporation of unfused phenyl groups and halogen atoms into the hybrid framework resulted in fine-tuned optical,structural,electronic,and electrochemical properties.This straightforward approach achieved improved selectivity and controlled narrowing of the product distribution,affording the efficient synthesis of structurally sophisticated Bsub(Pc_(2)-Nc_(1))hybrids.This then expands the library of 3-dimensionalπ-extended macrocycles for use in a range of applications,such as in optoelectronic devices with precisely tailored optical properties.

Sex-specific life-history trait expression in hybrids of a cave- and surface-dwelling fish (Poecilia mexicana, Poecilidae)

Evaluating the fitness of hybrids can provide important insights into genetic differences between species or diverging populations.We focused on surface-and cave-ecotypes of the widespread Atlantic molly Poecilia mexicana and raised F1 hybrids of reciprocal crosses to sexual maturity in a common-garden experiment.Hybrids were reared in a fully factorial 2 x 2 design consisting of lighting(light vs.darkness)and resource availability(high vs.low food).We quantified survival,ability to realize their full reproductive potential(i.e.,completed maturation for males and 3 consecutive births for females)and essential life-history traits.Compared to the performance of pure cave and surface fish from a previous experiment,F1s had the highest death rate and the lowest proportion of fish that reached their full reproductive potential.We also uncovered an intriguing pattern of sex-specific phenotype expression,because male hybrids expressed cave molly life histories,while female hybrids expressed surface molly life histories.Our results provide evidence for strong selection against hybrids in the cave molly system,but also sug-gest a complex pattern of sex-specific(opposing)dominance,with certain surface molly genes being dominant in female hybrids and certain cavemollygenes beingdominant in malehybrids.

Preparation of MXene-based hybrids and their application in neuromorphic devices

The traditional von Neumann computing architecture has relatively-low information processing speed and high power consumption,making it difficult to meet the computing needs of artificial intelligence(AI).Neuromorphic computing systems,with massively parallel computing capability and low power consumption,have been considered as an ideal option for data storage and AI computing in the future.Memristor,as the fourth basic electronic component besides resistance,capacitance and inductance,is one of the most competitive candidates for neuromorphic computing systems benefiting from the simple structure,continuously adjustable conductivity state,ultra-low power consumption,high switching speed and compatibility with existing CMOS technology.The memristors with applying MXene-based hybrids have attracted significant attention in recent years.Here,we introduce the latest progress in the synthesis of MXene-based hybrids and summarize their potential applications in memristor devices and neuromorphological intelligence.We explore the development trend of memristors constructed by combining MXenes with other functional materials and emphatically discuss the potential mechanism of MXenes-based memristor devices.Finally,the future prospects and directions of MXene-based memristors are briefly described.

聚酮化合物(polyketide)是一类来源广泛、结构多样的活性天然产物,聚酮合酶(polyketide synthase,PKS)负责聚酮骨架的生物合成。细菌次级代谢中PKS广泛存在,不同类型的PKS在组成和生物合成机制上各不相同,从而产生截然不同的聚酮骨架。根据细菌PKS功能和生物合成途径的不同,可以将其分为Ⅰ型、Ⅱ型和Ⅲ型。PKS通常能与其他生物合成酶系杂合以产生结构更为复杂的天然产物。同时,不同类型PKS之间也可以形成多种内部杂合,产生更多样的聚酮骨架。本文总结和比较PKS间的内部杂合,包括Ⅰ型PKS内部杂合、Ⅰ型/Ⅱ型PKS杂合以及Ⅰ型/Ⅲ型PKS杂合,归纳各种杂合基因簇的形成方式及其杂合特征。通过比较杂合聚酮化合物的生物合成机制并讨论杂合聚酮工程化改造的进展,展望了多种潜在的聚酮杂合模式,合理假设存在合成过程相反的Ⅰ型/Ⅱ型PKS杂合模式,或随着化合物的挖掘发现迄今未报道的Ⅱ型/Ⅲ型PKS杂合模式等,指出可以充分和全面地利用细菌基因组信息,通过酶和基因的生物勘探,发现更多更特殊的PKS杂合化合物等一系列针对新颖聚酮化合物进行基因组挖掘的方向,同时也提出了工程化改造trans-AT PKS在cis-AT模块中实现不同寻常的骨架修饰等多种PKS的工程化改造设想,为后续PKS内部杂合基因簇挖掘和表征提供一些新思路。
