Photopromoted carbonylation of alkyl halides with carbon monoxide can be carried out under ambient conditions with non-precious transition metal complexes (such as cobalt complexes) catalysts. Our preliminary work showed that alkyl halides can be transformed into alkene and alkane directly under irradiation, but the esters can not be transformed. It is assumed that the carbonylation of alkyl halides may be proceeded in two ways.
Photopromoted carbonylation of olefins with carbon dioxide can be completed in ambient conditions (room temperatures and atmospheric pressure) by Co(OAc)2 catalysis. It was found that in carbonyl carbons of methyl ester of aliphatic acid 50% is from CO2 and the other 50% from CH3OH by labelling experimental with 13CO2 and 13CH3OH.
